Fendt/AGCO: From Iron to Intelligence in Just 25 Years
Editor’s Note: As we mark the first 25 years of the 21st century, CropLife reflects on the innovations, challenges, and transformations that have shaped ag retail — honoring our past while looking ahead to agriculture’s promising future. In this article, we spotlight Fendt/AGCO and its remarkable evolution from traditional machinery to a leader in precision ag and smart farming technology.
For the company now known as Fendt/AGCO, the 21st century started with huge news. In November 2000, Duluth, GA-based AGCO Corp. – then primarily a manufacturer of tractors and other grower-oriented equipment – announced plans to purchase Ag-Chem Equipment.
Founded in 1963 by industry legend Al McQuinn, Ag-Chem Equipment at the time was well-known for its custom applicator equipment products, including RoGator self-propelled sprayers and TerraGator floaters. The company also owned Lor-Al applicators and SOILTEC, a provider of precision ag services/products.
“This deal will expand and strengthen Ag-Chem’s ability to compete worldwide,” said then Ag-Chem CEO McQuinn to Farm Chemicals magazine (the predecessor to CropLife) in a fall 2000 interview. By May 2001, the deal became official – and Ag-Chem products were folded into the AGCO family of brands.
One year later, in 2002, AGCO’s then Executive Chairman/President/CEO Robert Ratliff sat down with CropLife magazine to discuss why the company had acquired Ag-Chem and what it planned for the future. With 18 brands across the company’s portfolio, Ratliff was asked if this presented an “unwieldly” mix.
His answer was succinct. “We’ve set out to create a multi-brand business, but it’s really not that unusual,” he said. “We’ve establishing a General Motors model in an industry where it hadn’t existed before.”
Expanding Products
Over the next decade or so, AGCO spent much of its time upgrading and expanding the company’s product lines. This included introducing new RoGator models during the 2010 and 2011 growing seasons and developing new engines to be compliant with Tier IV emission standards.
AGCO also kept acquiring other ag-based companies. This included purchasing GSI, a manufacturer of grain storage and handling equipment, in 2011, and Precision Planting, a planting equipment and technology business, in 2017. AGCO also made a series of acquisitions in the Smart Tech field. This included Headsight, a maker of precision harvesting products and Appareo Systems, an agriculture-focused artificial intelligence (AI). Finally, in 2024, Fendt/AGCO purchased 85% percent of Trimble for $2 billion. This resulted in the formation of PTx Trimble, a joint venture between the companies for autonomizing and retrofitting farm equipment.
Many of the equipment innovations these acquisitions brought to the Fendt/AGCO brand family were on display at the company’s 2024 AGCO Tech Day event.
“Managing a farm is complicated; managing the right machine and technology for the job shouldn’t be,” said Eric Hansotia, AGCO’s Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer, at the event. “AGCO is unique in offering differentiated equipment brands to serve all farmers’ needs and the only company that can effectively retrofit almost any make or model of equipment with technology that will lead to higher yields with fewer inputs.”
In regard to Smart Tech, AGCO highlighted two products at this event. The first was WeedSeeker 2. Originally introduced in 2020 by Trimble, WeedSeeker 2 uses advanced optics and processing power to detect and eliminate resistant weeds. When a weed passes underneath the sensor it signals its linked spray nozzle to precisely deliver herbicide and kill the weed.
For green-on-green application work, AGCO highlighted its Precision Planting Vision system. This system works in concert with Precision Planting’s 2020 In-Cab Monitor, Symphony Nozzles, and boom-mounted Vision Cameras to distinguish weeds from beneficial plants. It then applies a precise amount of herbicide to the weed accordingly.
“Each brand’s unique value proposition and strategic fit within industry segments reinforces AGCO’s vision to be the trusted partner for industry-leading, smart farming solutions – a steadfast vision in the making since AGCO was founded just 34 years ago,” said Hansotia.
