The leadership team at Monte Vista Coop is very knowledgeable and had a great understanding of what they needed for storage and why — but in looking for a contractor they wanted somebody to pull all the pieces together and complete their puzzle. They were looking for a team that was willing to listen and work alongside them during the design and construction of their new buildings. Located in the San Luis Valley in Colorado, one of Monte Vista’s biggest hurdles was getting product in during the season — it’s simply more expensive and logistically challenging. Yet with the large growers in the valley that they service, Monte Vista needed to be able to increase their dry fertilizer storage capabilities to provide product during the season, to increase their blending speed, additional space for packaged and bulk crop protection products, and they needed shop space for servicing both their agronomy and propane equipment.

The clear panel running the full length of the headhouse provides substantial natural light in the headhouse and product bins below. Monte Vista chose Ranco’s slider tripper conveyor that only requires maintenance access on one side. As a result, Marcus designed a cost-effective catwalk system that only runs along one side of the conveyor but still wraps around both the head and tail of the tripper where access is needed on both sides for safe maintenance practices.

Monte Vista’s new dry building is a ‘rodless’ design. At Marcus we believe keeping rods out of dry storage bins allows our customers to maximize their storage space by being able to stack their product to full height. Along with also improving safety for their operators as there aren’t rods interfering with product flow to cause dangerous bridging on them, there’s less maintenance, and can increase the longevity of their building.

Monte Vista has two covered loadout lanes with two 30-ton overhead tanks on weigh scales. The two overhead tanks allow Monte Vista to stage blends while the weigh scales allow them to eliminate the need for a truck scale onsite and the need for each truck to take the time to weigh in and out.

Eliminating the use of the ladders and incorporating stairs was a focus during the design phase for the Monte Vista leadership team. To increase safety and ease for maintenance, the conveyor feeding the two 30- ton overhead tanks is accessible via a staircase directly from the control room. To access the catwalk in the headhouse for the inbound tripper conveyor, Ranco provided stairs in the support structure for the inbound bucket elevator.
As the turn-key general contractor that Monte Vista selected, Marcus procured and coordinated the complete project team for a greenfield site and design, built a dry fertilizer shed, and a pre-engineered metal warehouse that includes a shop and an attached office. The dry fertilizer facility is a 7,722-ton expandable facility with truck and rail receiving. There are two covered loadout lanes with two 30-ton overhead tanks on weigh scales. The two overhead tanks allow Monte Vista to stage blends while the weigh scales allow them to eliminate the need for a truck scale onsite and the need for each truck to take the time to weigh in and out. With nine macro bins, three micro bins, and an area designed in the alley to store additional bags, Monte Vista now has the building they envisioned to keep plenty of product on hand to service their growers during the season. The pre-engineered metal warehouse Marcus designed is a 21,845 square foot building supporting multiple business functions for Monte Vista. In this building they now have the space they need for packaged and bulk crop protection products, an agronomy shop where they can properly service and maintain their assets, and an attached office where the needed staff can be onsite. Also included is an energy shop as propane is a large portion of Monte Vista’s business and service to the area so this portion of the building allows them to maintain their propane fleet.
