New Application Technology Driving Growth in Spray Tips and Nozzles Market

For tips and nozzles manufacturers, 2022 was a very good year. “In general, the 2022 market for spray tips and nozzles was quite strong,” says Marty Heyen, Director of Marketing for TeeJet Technologies.

As for why this was the case, says Heyen, there was no one particular factor driving this market growth. Instead, there were a multitude of reasons impacting the strong market.

“Recovery from COVID-related supply chain issues was certainly an impactful part of the growth,” he says. “In addition, the objectives of applicators and growers alike to be more efficient in their spray applications continues to be a driving force in the spray tip market. Newer technologies in spray application also continue to drive spray tip growth.”

Rachelle Backer, Demand Market Analyst for Pentair, agrees with this assessment. “The spray nozzle market was strong in 2022, largely due to increased attention due to the variety of new spraying technologies coming onto the market,” says Backer. “We’re receiving more inquiries than ever from applicators looking for the best nozzle technology to pair with the sprayers and the applied chemistry.”

New Development Spurring Growth

In particular, she says, tips and nozzles growth over the past decade has been largely driven by significant increases in research and development. This has accelerated the rate of new technology adoption in the application world.

“The spread of individual nozzle control, pulse width modulation (PWM), the use of deep machine learning to identify and target individual weeds, and now drone spraying are increasing efficiency and productivity to a scale not yet seen in agricultural spraying,” says Backer. “This spread of new application technology calls for new nozzle technology to be developed alongside to maximize performance as well as return-on-investment.”

Besides more developments in tips and nozzles themselves, newer systems designed to increase efficiency and product usage on self-propelled sprayers has also led to new products in this marketplace.

“Spot spraying is an up-and-coming development,” says Will Smart, Owner of Greenleaf Technologies. “The Weed-It System, John Deere’s See & Spray Ultimate, and Greeneye’s Precision Spraying System have all increased their visibility at the agricultural trade shows this year, and units are making it to farmers’ fields. These spray systems often require special nozzles.”

And with these and other similar systems becoming more widespread, Smart believes the overall outlook for the tips and nozzles sectors remains strong. “As long as commodity prices remain attractive and farmers have pests to fight in their fields, there will be spraying,” he says.
