It’s Commodity Classic Time!

As the calendar turns to March, ag retailers and their grower-customers are getting ready to officially kick off the 2016 growing season. In all likelihood, plans are being drawn up for planting schedules, seed selections, and field preparations (not necessarily in that order).

But before jumping into the field, a good portion of the nation’s agricultural community will gather for one last winter trade show – the annual Commodity Classic. This year’s event will take place this week in New Orleans, LA, and is expected to draw approximately 10,000 attendees and hundreds of exhibitors. Also this year, the AgConnect event becomes part of the Commodity Classic festivities, so visitors can expect plenty of agricultural technology – both discussions and products – to be featured at the three-day show.

Besides high-tech and Big IRON equipment offerings, the Commodity Classic tends to be a big event for the crop protection product suppliers. Several of these are holding press briefings during the show to talk about new products or services, including Monsanto, BASF, Bayer CropScience, and Dow AgroSciences.

Of course, a lot of the conversation at this year’s Commodity Classic will likely center on all the recent company mergers that have taken place in this sector of agriculture over the past few months. Dow and DuPont Crop Protection will be joining forces by the end of the year and Syngenta is now part of ChemChina. These companies are bound to have plenty of traffic at their Commodity Classic booths as attendees try to get a feel for what these companywide mergers will ultimately mean for them and their customer bases.

Over the next few weeks and months, be sure to watch all the media vehicles employed by CropLife – in print, online, and video – to find out what the big news was at the 2016 Commodity Classic. More importantly, this should help the entire marketplace gauge what kind of year this might be for the agricultural industry as a whole.
