These Were the Most Popular Self-Propelled Sprayers Among Ag Retailers in 2022

For much of the agricultural world in 2022, non-normal trends dominated the news. From doubling fertilizer prices to supply chain disruptions to ongoing workforce issues, non-normal was the overriding thing for much of the globe.

Yet, when it comes to the world of agricultural equipment — in particular, the self-propelled sprayers sector among ag retailers — normal was definitely the norm.

For several years now, the annual CropLife 100 survey has looked at which sprayer manufacturers are the most popular among the nation’s top ag retailers. Since the start of the 2010s, the market has increasingly been dominated by the Big Three companies — Fendt/AGCO, Case IH/Miller, and John Deere/Hagie. During most years in fact, these three companies (and their numerous brand name machines) have tended to hold a better than 90% market share vs. the rest of the field.

And in 2022, this remained the situation. According to the 2022 CropLife 100 survey, the 84 respondents that own self-propelled sprayers typically have units on their outlet lots sporting yellow, red, and green paint jobs. In fact, during 2022, the Big Three manufacturers held a 93% market share between them — up 2% from the 2021 survey results. The rest of the field, consisting of such companies as GVM, RBR Enterprise, Equipment Technologies, and OXBO, hold the remaining 7% market share combined.

In terms of how the 93% market share divided among manufacturers during 2022, John Deere/Hagie again led the pack. According to the survey, 37% of respondents have John Deere or Hagie sprayers in their fleets, an increase from 34% in the 2021 survey. The remaining 56% of the market is divided almost equally between Fendt/AGCO and Case IH/Miller, 29% vs. 27%, respectively.

More Deeres in 2023

Besides looking at the year just past, the annual CropLife 100 survey also asks participants to offer up their buying intentions for the upcoming year as well. According to the data, 2023 looks like it will be another busy year for the Big Three sprayer manufacturers. However, one company is expected to see the lion’s share of new sales.

Based upon the information gathered in the 2022 CropLife 100 survey, 42% of the nation’s top ag retailers plan to purchase their new sprayers for the 2023 growing season from John Deere and Hagie. For the company, this represents a strong 7% increase from the 35% of 2021 CropLife 100 respondents looking to buy machines from John Deere for the 2022 growing season.

After John Deere/Hagie equipment, the other companies that comprise the Big Three can expect make up the bulk of new sprayer purchases in 2023, with Fendt/AGCO providing units for 23% of CropLife 100 members and Case IH/Miller supplying products for 19%. These percentages are virtually unchanged from the buying intentions figures recorded in the 2021 CropLife 100 survey.

A special mention goes to RBR Enterprise. According to the 2022 CropLife 100 survey, 1% of the nation’s ag retailers plan to buy sprayers from the Mississippi-based manufacturer.
