Pacific Coast Fertilizer Announces Interest In Longview, WA Facility

Pacific Coast Fertilizer LP (PCF) announced at the Cowlitz Economic Development Council board of directors meeting its interest in developing a state-of-the-art facility in Longview, WA, to manufacture high-quality nitrogen fertilizer to meet the needs of farmers in the Pacific Northwest. PCF is a joint venture partnership founded by leading North American industrial project developers with top global technology and engineering firms including Ferrostaal Topsoe Projects, Haldor Topsoe and Saturn Ferrostaal Gas Chemicals.

“Across the Pacific Northwest, agricultural demand for nitrogen fertilizers remains at an all-time high. With the region importing the vast majority of all fertilizers used, existing suppliers command premium prices and high long-haul transportation costs, not to mention the associated emissions,” said Scott Charpentier, president of PCF. “To better serve the local agricultural community, PCF intends to develop a state-of-the-art facility in the Pacific Northwest for the production and distribution of nitrogen-based fertilizer with an industry leading commitment to safe and secure operations.”

Currently, the proposed facility is in the project definition stage and PCF is considering a number of sites including approximately 50 acres of property in the Mint Farm Industrial Park, owned in part by the City of Longview. Once permitted, the proposed facility would create approximately 1,000 jobs over the three-year construction period and 80-100 family-wage direct, permanent jobs once in operation. It will also generate much-needed local tax revenue as well as direct and indirect economic activity and jobs.

“For nearly two decades, bringing a proven industry partner to the shovel-ready Mint Farm Industrial Park has been a top priority,” said Ted Sprague, president of the Cowlitz Economic Development Council. “We hope to welcome Pacific Coast Fertilizer to Longview and look forward to working closely with the company to bring new family-wage jobs to our community.”

Nitrogen-based fertilizers are an essential element and a much-needed source of nutrients for growing food crops. With the application of modern nitrogen-based fertilizers, the number of people that can be supported per acre of arable land more than doubles. Although almost 80% of Earth’s atmosphere is comprised of nitrogen, it is chemically and biologically unusable in this form. Ammonia (anhydrous) fertilizer has the highest nitrogen content of any commercial fertilizer. It can be directly applied to soil as a plant nutrient or converted into a variety of common nitrogen fertilizers.

Ammonia occurs naturally in the environment from the breakdown of organic material. Man-made sources of ammonia include fertilizer. It is also a common household item, often used for cleaning.
