Syngenta Recommends Soybean Scouting To Prevent Economic Loss From Insects

Proper soybean insect pest control begins with scouting. As the warm weather continues, Syngenta encourages growers to implement a scouting program to maximize yields and profitability.

Growers are beginning to see soybean aphid and Japanese beetle populations appear in their fields. While numbers have yet to reach treatment threshold levels, it’s important to monitor for these pests regularly. As noted by South Dakota State University Extension, current soybean aphid numbers are higher than normal, so scouting should start now. It is recommended that growers pay particular attention to locations with a history of insect problems as patterns may repeat themselves.

“Although damage may vary, parts of the Midwest are already experiencing soybean aphid and Japanese beetle infestations,” said Brent Lackey, insecticide product lead for Syngenta. “It’s important to consider potential losses and take the necessary preventive steps. Scouting programs are crucial for effective insect management, and now is the time to get started.”

While maintaining a plan takes time and patience, the return can be well worth the investment. Here’s a list of tips to keep in mind as insect scouting begins this season:

  • Develop a plan and keep records of observations. Identifying pest patterns and cycles can help determine best treatment options.
  • Scout weekly to identify the pest problem before costly damage occurs.
  • Scout plants thoroughly and throughout the entire field, including field edges.
  • Apply an insecticide at full rate only if pest populations reach threshold levels.
  • Scout after treatment to evaluate effectiveness.

If scouting reveals insect populations at treatment thresholds, Syngenta offers Endigo ZC insecticide to combat some of the most difficult-to-control pests. Endigo ZC combines three industry-leading technologies, including a proprietary Zeon concentrate formulation, for quick knockdown and extended residual control. With robust labeled rates of complementary modes of action, Endigo ZC offers control of numerous pests, including soybean aphid, Japanese beetle, stinkbugs and bean leaf beetle.
