Growers, Ag Experts Review Acuron Corn Herbicide First-Year Performance

After more than 800 field trials and years of formulation testing followed by EPA registration in April 2015, Acuron corn herbicide had its first on-farm use this season. First-year users were asked through in-person interviews at their farms about their thoughts on the herbicide and most frequently cited control of toughest weeds, longer-lasting residual and application flexibility as its most valuable features.

Fred Steck, a grower from Carman, IL, is candid about his initial expectations. “When I first saw the Acuron laughing weed commercial, I thought the joke would be on me,” says Steck. “But about four days after applying Acuron, the weeds started to curl up. Cocklebur and morningglory had never curled up much in the past, but Acuron nailed them both.”

Grower Nathan Miller of Washington Court House, OH, says he waited a long time for an effective product on his most problematic weeds. “I want to apply one product pre-emergence and receive season-long control. Acuron has performed leaps and bounds better than our previous herbicide program by delivering better control of my toughest weeds, giant ragweed and morningglory.”

Kevin Buford, a grower from Kakoha, MO, explains that his previous herbicide program had cost him time and money. “In previous years, I’ve had problems with cocklebur emerging later in the season, forcing me to respray up to 30 percent of my acres,” says Buford. “The biggest difference I saw this year with Acuron is longer-lasting residual control that prevented late-season weeds and grasses.”

For many growers in 2015, the wide application window of Acuron (28 days pre-plant through 12-inch corn) is what enabled effective weed control when rains came at challenging times or lingered for days or weeks.

“Acuron’s application flexibility was very important this year when rain kept us out of the fields at the tail end of pre-emergence,” says Pat Mullooly, retailer at the DeLong Co., Inc., in Clinton, WI. “Some of the corn had spiked through by the time we were able to apply; but regardless of the delay, we had excellent weed control with Acuron.”

Syngenta agronomic and technical experts also continue to be pleased with product performance, as observed in customers’ fields, at Syngenta Grow More Experience Sites and in other trials.

“The residual control I have seen with Acuron at our Grow More Experience Sites is unmatched,” says Jeff Laufenberg, Syngenta agronomic service representative in Wisconsin. “Compared to other herbicides, Acuron consistently delivered broad-spectrum weed control against our toughest weeds like ragweed and waterhemp.”
