Don’t leave yield on the table
Play offense with seed recommendations. Each season presents its own challenges and opportunities that are fresh on your customers’ minds at harvest. Help your customers diversify their seed lineups to raise the bar for production.
While every season should be led with a good offensive plan, retailers should also look at defensive hybrids that perform well in drought conditions, said Dustin Teig, Brevant® seeds retail product agronomist. We can’t predict what Mother Nature has in store, but we can build a solid all-around game plan.
“Pick out Brevant brand products that fare better in a drought-stressed year, but don’t forget about your customers’ highly productive acres,” Teig said. “If Mother Nature is going to give us good rains and optimal conditions, we want to have a powerful hybrid out there to help maximize your customers’ bushels.”
This year, for example, there has been extreme drought in parts of the western Corn Belt and good growing conditions in parts of Iowa and the eastern Corn Belt.
For those dry and drought-stressed acres, Brevant® brand Optimum® AQUAmax® hybrids are useful tools equipped for better water utilization. These hybrids are built with yield potential in mind, while staying green and holding stalk quality throughout the season.
A tale of two seasons
Think back to the severe drought of 2020, followed by the highly productive 2021 season with record yield in Iowa. If farmers had selected only drought-tolerant hybrids for their productive acres that received plenty of moisture, they might have left some yield on the table. One way to combat the extremes is to help customers diversify their lineups with products that can handle a variety of conditions.
“Corn rootworm pressure is out there, and we’re still seeing beetle counts like last year,” Teig said. “Maybe Mother Nature will help us out next season and keep them suppressed some, but we just don’t know. Drought conditions have become more common, and that’s when corn rootworm seems to rear its ugly head. It’s not going away.”
Brevant brand Qrome® products allow the freedom to choose without compromise so farmers get both yield potential and corn rootworm (CRW) protection. Qrome technology is proven to reduce stress from troublesome insects like rootworms and corn borers in a wide range of growing conditions.
