Big A, Burrer Farms

There’s an old saying that proclaims: “If it’s not broke, don’t fix it.” For its fertilizer application needs, Burrer Farms of Elyria, OH, is a firm believer in this bit of conventional wisdom.

Since the 1980s, the company has handled much of its dry and liquid application work with four Big A units, which date back to the mid-1970s in vintage. As Owner Tom Burrer explains: “We like the simplicity of these machines vs. new model floaters, with all there electronics over hydraulic solenoid and valves.”

A Northern Life

As for the liquid application Big A pictured on this page, Burrer says it started out its working life on a farm in Minnesota with a 55-foot boom. This was later upgraded to an 80-foot boom, virtually doubling the unit’s application capacity.

In the 1980s, the unit was acquired by a Western Ohio cooperative, which installed air conditioning in the cab. Burrer Farms acquired it later that decade, when the cooperative decided to upgrade its fleet to RoGators and Spra-Coupes.

“This Big A 2500 works and runs well in Northern Ohio near the Southern shores of Lake Erie,” says Burrer. “It handles about 5,000 acres per year on our farm, along with the other classic units that do about the same amount.”
