Ag-Gator: Eatin’ Some Acres

Every great invention starts from some humble beginning. That early prototype becomes the foundation for hundreds of innovations and improvements that eventually become the product we all know and use today.
A case in point is shown on this page — the Ag-Gator 404 SP, predecessor to the mighty RoGator line currently manufactured by AGCO Corp. that glide majestically through millions of acres of American Heartland every year.
The model shown here, conceived by founder Al McQuinn, was the third unit to roll off the line for the 1968 model year. This stripped down version would set you back $7,600, and standard features included a 65 hp Wisconsin air-cooled engine, 4-speed syncro-mesh transmission, power steering, a 140-gallon tank, 40-foot boom, and 30 inches of crop clearance.
For the discriminating applicator, a deluxe cab package, suspension fertilizer kit, and foam market kit could be added, bringing the total to a shade over $10,000. It’s a little retro, but for the cost of a high-end automatic steering system, this little beauty could be yours.
