CropLife 100 Early Bird Special: A Whole (Lotta) Grain

Editor’s Note: Each year for the past 38 years, CropLife magazine has gathered huge amounts of data to compile its annual CropLife 100 report. The bulk of this information will be presented throughout the month of December to our readers. There are, however, several findings that for one reason or another don’t make the final analysis. So, going into the 2021 report, we’ve decided to present some of these data sets as separate stories presented in our weekly enewsletter. With the table now set, this week’s menu includes a hearty portion of information on how the grain category performed for the nation’s top ag retailers.

Each year, when CropLife magazine is gathering information for its annual rankings of the nation’s top ag retailers by sales, there is one category important to many companies that we don’t include in our totals. That would be grain.

And the reason for this omission is simple – although they are very important to many ag retailers, including grain revenues in our annual rankings would completely shake up the overall CropLife 100. For you see, many ag retailers on the list – including many of the cooperatives – take in two or three times the grain revenue annually compared with what they make on crop inputs and services provided to grower-customers. In fact, some ag retailers have billions of dollars in grain sales each year vs. a few million in crop inputs/services.

This year, 2021, is a perfect example of how the grain category would upend much of the CropLife 100 rankings. According to the 2021 CropLife 100 survey, the nation’s top ag retailers had $19.9 billion in grain income during the year, up a staggering 34.5% vs. 2020’s $14.8 billion figure. If this amount was added to the rest of the CropLife 100 total, the nation’s top ag retailers would have earned $54.4 billion in 2021. Furthermore, the grain category would have accounted for 37% of this total, easily outpacing the revenue totals for fertilizer, crop protection products, seed, and custom application services.
