Gowan USA Announces the Registration and Availability of CLIFFHANGER SC Herbicide for the California Rice Market

Gowan USA has announced that CLIFFHANGER SC Herbicide is now registered and available for the 2024 season in California. This new product expands the company’s rice portfolio, offering an alternative to its well-established BUTTE Herbicide.

CLIFFHANGER SC Herbicide is a soluble liquid (SC) formulation effective against various weed species such as Ricefield bulrush, Smallflower umbrella sedge, and Sprangletop. Cliffhanger SC Herbicide contains 3.40 lbs of benzobicyclon per gallon. The application rate for effective weed control is between 8.4 and 10.3 fluid ounces per acre. Using Methylated Seed Oils (MSO) or MSO Blends at a 1% v/v concentration is recommended for optimal efficacy.

Full field coverage is essential for best results, including treating headlands and field edges. Water management guidelines for Cliffhanger SC Herbicide are the same as those recommended for BUTTE Herbicide. A minimum of 4 inches of floodwater should be maintained at the shallowest point in the field during application, and this flood should be held for 10 to 14 days after treatment.

Use of CLIFFHANGER SC Herbicide requires specific training and certification. Existing users certified last year with BUTTE Herbicide are exempt from re-certification.

“We are pleased to announce the approval of CLIFFHANGER SC Herbicide for the California rice market,” said Eric McEwen, Director of Marketing for Gowan USA. “Benzobicyclon has been a useful tool for California rice growers over the past several years, and now growers have a liquid formulation option.”
