Yara Tampa Ammonia Terminal Garners ResponsibleAg Honors
November 25, 2015 Yara has received its first ResponsibleAg Certification for its Tampa, FL, Ammonia terminal location. This achievement demonstrates Yara’s commitment to employee safety, the environment and the communities in which it operates.
“Look what happens when everyone in the facility is dedicated to doing their job at the highest level and settles for nothing less,” says Charles Rowe, Facilities Manager of Yara Tampa Ammonia. “We’ve achieved this with the employees’ commitment and they continue to put safety first!” This is evident as the facility has gone more than 31 years without a lost-time accident.
The first ResponsibleAg certification for Yara is a significant accomplishment, of which the Tampa Ammonia Terminal and Yara North America are proud. Yara anticipates all of its North American facilities will be certified through the program by mid-2016. This has been a collaborative effort involving Yara’s safety and operations teams, as well as other safety professionals within the fertilizer industry.
ResponsibleAg is a non-profit industry led organization founded in the U.S. in 2014 to promote the safe storage and handling of fertilizers. Utilizing on-site assessments, ResponsibleAg educates fertilizer storage and handling facilities to achieve and maintain compliance with federal environmental, health, safety and security laws and regulations.
“Not only is the ResponsibleAg Certification important for Yara,” adds Jorgen Rostrup, Business Unit Manager for Yara North America, “but it is quickly becoming recognized as the industry standard for fertilizer safety and security. We view this as a critical milestone in our journey to become a model of compliance and stewardship for our communities.”

As a voluntary program, fertilizer retailers, wholesalers and suppliers may participate in ResponsibleAg by registering online. The fertilizer storage and handling facility then has up to three years to complete a federal regulatory compliance assessment by a credentialed ResponsibleAg auditor. Like the Yara Tampa Ammonia facility, upon successful completion of the assessment and any required corrective action the facility will be identified as being officially “certified” through ResponsibleAg.
