How Much Sulphur do you Actually Get and at What Cost: AMS vs. Sulphur Bentonite

Tiger-Sul Products^® has developed a series of calculators that allows visitors to compare the sulphur impact of their fertilizer dollar. Visitors on the Tiger-Sul website (www.tigersul.com/calculators) can compare the true cost of sulphur from Ammonium Sulphate (AMS) with Tiger-Sul Sulphur Bentonite products using their current fertilizer prices.

These calculators were a direct result of visiting with farmers and consultants, asking the hard questions about economics and including sulphur in their operations.

Tiger-Sul has now developed a series of calculators to help farm operations see the actual price for sulphur and other nutrients. The calculators are easy to use; visitors just enter a few details to determine profitability in their operation.

Fertilizer costs can account for a significant total cash cost for crop production (depending on the crop, year, and fertilizer prices). It is important to be able to compare different nutrients to determine production cost on a dollar per yield unit basis (dollars per bushel, dollars per pound, etc.). Price increases typically are driven by strong global and domestic demand, low inventories, issues with the just-in-time delivery, and production challenges of the fertilizer industry. When price increases occur, usually it is due to more than one of these challenges.

Transportation costs has fertilizer dealers looking for ways to purchase more “nutrient-dense products,” which in turn reduce overall costs. Farmers are looking to these nutrient-dense products to improve fertilizer application efficiency, especially during the planting season. In the end, none of this really matters if the farmer does not know their actual cost for production and cannot maximize their economic returns.
