HGS BioScience is combining proven biological technologies into integrated solutions designed to enhance performance, reduce risk, and fit seamlessly into existing programs. Learn how stacked biologicals are helping retailers confidently bring more consistent value to growers.

Why Stacked Biologicals Are Gaining Retailer Attention

Biological products continue to gain traction, but many retailers still face the same challenge: identifying solutions that deliver consistent agronomic performance without adding operational complexity. HGS BioScience believes the answer lies in stacking complementary biological technologies into products that fit seamlessly into existing programs.

“The biologicals conversation has to extend beyond efficacy alone,” says Mike Steffeck, CEO of HGS BioScience. “The products must generate agronomic value while fitting operational realities.”

That philosophy guides the company’s approach. Formed through the combination of four established biological businesses with more than 100 years of combined industry experience, HGS BioScience brings together expertise across humates, bionutritionals, extracts, and microbials. Rather than treating those categories as separate offerings, the company focuses on combining them into integrated solutions.

“We’re taking technologies that are effective in their own right and stacking them together in a way that enhances the odds of success, increases the ROI for the farmer, and makes the retailer’s job easier,” explains Steffeck.

Bringing Proven Ag Strategies to Biologicals

The concept is familiar to retailers. The industry has long relied on stacked traits in seed and premix crop protection products to improve performance and reduce risk. HGS applies the same thinking to biologicals.

“Stacking technologies is a proven strategy for strengthening product performance,” Steffeck says. “When multiple biological modes of action are combined, the result is a more robust solution with greater reliability.”

One example is HumiK ONE Slingshot, a product that combines HGS’s low-use-rate humate granule technology with a 15-strain microbial consortium designed to improve phosphate and potassium availability. According to Steffeck, retailer response has been strong.

“We’ve already sold out of our first production run,” he notes. “It’s showing firsthand what can happen when complementary technologies are combined into a single product.”

Designed for the Reality of Retail Operations

For retailers, performance alone is not enough. Any biological recommendation must fit within the realities of application, logistics, and seasonal workload.

“When 350 million acres of row crops are getting planted in a 60- to 90-day window, products have to fit seamlessly into what retailers are already doing,” Steffeck emphasizes.

That operational fit is a major focus for HGS BioScience. The company offers granular, liquid, and powder formulations designed to work across dry fertilizer, liquid fertility, crop protection, and seed treatment programs. Its granular products are engineered to match the handling characteristics retailers expect from mainstream fertilizer products. Formulated with a patented Extracted Granule Technology, these granules feature a low dust formulation and improved blending capabilities with urea.

How Biologicals Are Earning Greater Credibility

As biological adoption grows, Steffeck believes some of the industry’s long-standing concerns are beginning to fade. Questions around storage, shelf life, and specialized handling are becoming less relevant as formulations improve.

Concerns about consistency are also changing. Increased investment in research and development is raising the standard across the biologicals market.

HGS supports that effort through an active R&D program and greenhouse testing operation that helps accelerate product validation and commercialization.

Key Questions Retailers Should Ask

When evaluating biological products, Steffeck encourages retailers to focus on three areas: company history, operational fit, and risk reduction.

“Ask how long the company has been around and how long the products have been in the market,” he says. “Then look at whether those products integrate into your program without creating operational risk.”

He also sees value in products that combine multiple proven technologies into a single offering. By stacking biologicals with established performance records, retailers can improve the likelihood of consistent ROI across a wider range of conditions.

For HGS BioScience, stacked biologicals offer a practical path forward. By combining proven technologies and delivering them in retailer-friendly formulations, the company aims to make biological products easier to evaluate, easier to sell, and more likely to deliver consistent results in the field.
