Experts from agtech companies weigh in on what we can expect with mobile apps this year.
BY MATT HOPKINS – SENIOR ONLINE EDITOR

You never get a second chance to make a first impression. This old saying not only applies to our everyday lives, it’s also quite “applicable” to the mobile app world. That’s because one in four people will only use an app once after installation, according to the latest survey from Statista, making retention an ongoing challenge for mobile app developers.
Agtech companies are not immune to this one-and-done dilemma, as they also only have one shot to impress new users. Even as technologies like IoT, machine learning, and artificial intelligence (AI) have given birth to a new era in agricultural app development, user experience serves as the great equalizer — allowing small organizations to compete with the giants for long-term retention.

As the agribusiness industry moves faster and faster, mobile ag professionals need the ability to quickly find actionable insights whenever and wherever decisions are made. And a good user experience can create the kind of loyalty to keep them coming back for more, increasing engagement and confidence each time.
Checking out the “Ratings and Reviews” section within the app stores on iTunes and Google Play is a must prior to downloading an app. It will often give you a glimpse of the user experience you might expect. Consider these reviews, for instance, from users of one of the grain marketing apps on this year’s list:
“Easy way to transact grain. Browsing bids near me was quick and easy. Great to be able to see all my contracts in one place and see what I needed to do next to get paid.”
“Finally! Very functional, very easy to use — there’s finally a way to manage grain marketing from my handheld device!”
“Simple and easy app to market your grain. Easy way to find more buyers and better prices.”
It’s not surprising at all that this app has a 4.9 out of 5 rating in the App Store. The retention on this app is solid, and it all starts with user experience. But what are some of the characteristics of a good user experience? For many app developers, it all starts with access.
“One of the most important parts of every app is accessibility, or the ability for users to interact with an app,” says Reinder Prins, Chief Marketing Officer for Agworld.
“Especially in agriculture, where users are often in the field, out in the glaring sun, or using the app with dirty fingers during scouting activities, it’s important for an app to be as accessible (readable) as possible.”
Rob Weber, Marketing Manager at Software Solutions Integrated and the Grower360 app, agrees, saying functionality, efficiency, and accessibility are the three key characteristics of a successful mobile application. “You want the user experience to be something they can adopt easily and decide what they need in order to be successful,” he says. “The design of the application needs to be consistent to where it allows for easy navigation that enhances the user experience.
“Ensuring the right tools are available to complete tasks efficiently. Showing the end-user that this specific application is a ‘need to have’ and not a ‘want to have’ is important for adoption. Listening to end users to understand the tools they need is important to drive adoption. If you provide a tool that is functional, efficient, and accessible, you can certainly achieve that.”
Of course, having a logical workflow and intuitive user interface are still as important as they’ve always been for app developers.
“App users, especially in the agricultural space, are receiving a lot of data from various technologies and sources,” says Sasha Shayovitch, Head of Marketing, Prospera Technologies, which powers the Valley Insights app. “In order to make the grower’s work easier in the day-to-day, companies should strive to create simpler, more intuitive app experiences. We cannot assume every grower will be able to navigate a more complex application — the experience needs to be as clear as possible. One specific example is to not have too many actions required in one screen. This allows the grower to know exactly what they are looking at and what action needs to be done — without overcomplicating the flow.”
Trends in Agriculture Apps
So where do agriculture apps go next? As we look ahead to 2022 and beyond, experts from several ag-tech companies offered their insight into the trends shaping mobile app development and what we can expect to see in agriculture.
One significant trend recently has been mobile app integration. More companies are looking to partner with other app providers to give professionals the option of using the complete infrastructure behind their applications, ultimately leading to better results and improved productivity.
“It used to be ‘fashionable’ for every agtech startup to create their own app,” says Agworld’s Prins. “Increasingly however, providers are realizing that users don’t want to use a plethora of different apps each day, while the providers themselves are losing the appetite to invest in an app that only gets minimal usage.
“What we see is a strong rationalization of agtech providers to integrate with other providers where it makes sense. Users are increasingly being put at the center of providers’ strategies, which often dictates that integrating certain service offerings and letting different offerings ‘talk to each other’ becomes important. If users have an agtech app that they already use every day, it can often make sense for other/new providers to work together with this incumbent provider instead of trying to force users to include another app in their daily routine.”
A prime example of this is the new Frames by Agworld in the Agworld app. “With Frames by Agworld, we have created a low-threshold API structure that allows other technology providers to visualize data in Agworld without having to go through the expense of creating bespoke two-way data integration,” Prins says. “An example of this would be for growers that use Semios as well as Agworld to see key IoT data from Semios such as growing degree days, pest pressure, or local weather conditions on the maps page in the Agworld app (coming soon).”
There’s also been a greater emphasis on creating trust with app users from the outset, Shayovitch says, which is paramount in making that good first impression.
“The most prominent trends we are seeing involve a movement toward simple, quick, and intuitive flows, so there is no confusion or question as to what is being viewed or what action needs to be taken,” she says. “In addition, many apps are aiming to create an easier onboarding or ‘get started’ process, as well as showing the user quick value, which builds trust in the experience from there.”
COVID-19 has affected almost every single facet of our world, and the mobile apps space was no exception, Weber says. “It had a ripple effect across many industries — ag included,” he says. “Think of how you shop on Amazon from your phone or tablet to quickly reorder or buy something. It is transferring more and more to the agtech space where our partners and their customers expect a similar experience.
“Today’s users expect mobility when it comes to technology offerings. Having realtime updates that are relatable to the farmer are key in today’s world. The increased communication ask between ag retailer/coop and farmer has grown exponentially.”
