House, Senate Farm Bill Frameworks Affirms Bipartisan Support for USDA Conservation Program
The newly unveiled Farm Bill proposals from Senate Agriculture Committee Chair Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) and House Agriculture Committee Chair Glenn Thompson (R-Pa.) affirm the strong bipartisan support for increased funding for Farm Bill conservation programs. The National Wildlife Federation urged congressional leaders to build on this foundation with a bipartisan 2024 Farm Bill that permanently incorporates agriculture conservation funding from the Inflation Reduction Act, protects the climate guardrails associated with that funding, has strong provisions for wildlife and conservation, safeguards equitable access to USDA programs, and supports productive and resilient farms and ranches and thriving communities.
“There is broad agreement that Farm Bill conservation programs are incredibly effective and need more funding. The Senate and House Farm Bill frameworks underscore that lawmakers understand the vital role these USDA conservation programs play in helping farmers, ranchers, and foresters adopt better conservation practices by providing increased, permanent funding for those programs,” said Collin O’Mara, president and CEO of the National Wildlife Federation. “We are particularly pleased to see that Senator Stabenow’s proposal preserves the climate sideboards for Inflation Reduction Act funding, includes bold new provisions to protect native grasslands through a nationwide sodsaver provision, and includes new provisions to support wildlife corridors on working lands.
“Time is running out to pass a 2024 Farm Bill. Now is the time for Congressional leaders to build upon the common ground that conservation provides and work together toward swift passage of a bipartisan Farm Bill. We look forward to working with Chair Stabenow and Chair Thompson to finalize and pass a strong Farm Bill for producers, soil, water, wildlife and climate.
