Survey: Spreaders, Sprayers Among Top Ag Retail Equipment Purchases in 2020

As most prognosticators will tell you, predicting the future is never easy. Take living in the year 2020, for instance. According to a pair of my favorite science-fiction movies from the 1970s, everyone should now be enjoying on television the blood sport of rollerball while snacking on little square wafers called Soylent Green, made for (and from) their fellow man.

Thankfully, neither of these extreme predictions for life in the year 2020 has come to pa ss. But what does the immediate future hold for the ag retail marketplace, particularly for the readers of CropLife IRONĀ®? On this question, we can provide some insight.

CropLife, recently conducted its annual Buying Intentions Survey for 2020. For the past six years, this survey has asked respondents what crop inputs and equipment they are planning to purchase for the upcoming growing season.

Ag retailers for the most part in 2020 are planning to increase their spending across the board for fertilizers and certain crop protection products (herbicides and fungicides). In terms of equipment, most respondents say they plan to keep their spending in 2020 at the same levels they had in 2019.

As for what pieces of equipment might see increases in spending this season, only three categories rank higher than 20% in the survey. This includes fertilizer spreaders at 21% (with sales up more than 1%) and sprayers at 22%. Leading the pack among ag retail equipment purchases in 2020 are products in the mixing/blending category for dry and liquid fertilizer. Here, 24% of the 2020 Buying Intentions Survey respondents plan to increase their spending more than 1%.
