University Of Arkansas Flag The Technology Program Adds Enlist Weed Control System

Dow AgroSciences’ Enlist Weed Control System is now part of the University of Arkansas’ Flag the Technology program, according to a Dow AgroSciences press release. Building on the Roundup Ready system, the Enlist system is a new herbicide-tolerant trait technology that will provide exceptional weed control in corn, soybeans and cotton. Regulatory approvals are pending for Enlist cotton.

Started in 2010, the Flag the Technology program provides a visual reference for applicators to distinguish between fields planted with different herbicide-tolerant trait technologies.

“This simple, uniform flag system is a way for us to help applicators know they are spraying the right herbicide on the right field,” says Bob Scott, Ph.D., Extension weed scientist with the University of Arkansas.

Each participating technology has a distinct color scheme for its flag to alert applicators to the trait technology that has been planted.  Scott helped develop the simple flag system and encourages growers to place flags at each field’s main entrance and at the turn rows.

“With multiple crops and chemistries in our area, tools like Flag the Technology are critical,” says Malcolm Haigwood, Arkansas grower. “We use it on our farm. It provides us a nonverbal communication tool and added confidence when making an application.”
Haigwood urged more growers to adopt the system.

“The flags also are one way to help applicators know if different trait technologies are planted close to each other or near specialty crops,” says Jonathan Siebert, Ph.D., Enlist field specialist leader, Dow AgroSciences. “Knowing what’s in neighboring fields in combination with environmental conditions, such as wind speed and direction, can help determine if it is suitable to complete an application.”

Interest Grows For Flag The Technology program

Through the years, Scott has seen the Flag the Technology program gain momentum in neighboring states, such as Missouri, Mississippi and Louisiana.

“Support from the Arkansas Soybean Promotion Board has helped the program expand as additional herbicide-tolerant systems become available,” Scott says.

Flags for the Enlist system will be available from Dow AgroSciences representatives. The Enlist system will be represented by a blue flag with white, vertical stripes to indicate tolerance to both 2,4-D (blue) and glyphosate (white).

Keep Information With You While You’re On-The-Go

In addition to the Flag the Technology flags, growers planting Enlist™ crops can input field information in the Enlist Ahead app to manage herbicide application information. The app offers growers and applicators vital herbicide application information from a single source.

Designed for use with the Enlist system, the Enlist Ahead app is a precision agriculture tool for maximizing weed control performance, managing weed resistance and making responsible applications of Enlist Duo™ herbicide with Colex-D™ Technology.
Using the application planner within the app, growers can outline which fields contain Enlist™ crops and share the data with their applicators.

“The Enlist Ahead app keeps growers’ field data at their fingertips,” Siebert says. “They can see the important information needed to make a responsible application of Enlist Duo.”
