Pump Day

Quick — what do microwave ovens, Meet The Press, and Hypro have in common? All three were first introduced to the world in 1947. Today, 60 years later, all three of these important market innovations are still going strong, having become key parts of their respective industries.
To help celebrate this important milestone in its corporate history, New Brighton, MN-based Hypro Corp. is looking for some working examples of its early pumps. The company is asking customers to share their pump success stories — a brief description of the application for the Hypro pump, how long it has been in service, and the pump’s make and model number. Winners will be chosen in five categories — piston, plunger, roller, centrifugal, and diaphragm. As prizes, these winners will receive a new updated pump from Hypro featuring the latest company technology.
“This is a very special way for Hypro to share its anniversary with its customers,” says Bonnie Koste, market analyst for Hypro Spray Group. “Each pump that is still operating after several decades can probably tell a very unique story. This contest will give us a chance to share these tales with all our customers.”
Humble Beginnings
According to Koste, Hypro’s history began 60 years ago in the homes of Harry J. Sadler and Ernest E. Cook. The two men started manufacturing their first pump — the Flex Rotor mainly used as a utility pump to water lawns and drain basements — in November 1947. Since then, the company has added all manner of pumps to its family of products, along with spray nozzles and various accessories.
To enter the oldest working pump contest, customers need to submit their pump information to Hypro by Friday, April 6. If possible, entrants should include a picture of the pump. All entries should also include their name, address, phone number, and e-mail address. Entries can be mailed to Hypro, Attn: Oldest Working Pump Contest, 375 Fifth Ave. NW, New Brighton, MN, 55112-3288. Winners will be announced on April 16.
