Phosphorus is one of the most challenging inputs retailers and growers are managing this season. With fertilizer prices remaining elevated and grain markets under pressure, many growers are rethinking fall fertility plans. Some are significantly reducing phosphorus applications, while others are considering skipping them altogether.
According to Dave Schwartz, vice president of strategic retail accounts at Verdesian Life Sciences, those decisions could have long-term consequences.
“The price of phosphorus has jumped dramatically,” Schwartz says. “That, coupled with low grain prices, has really created an issue for farmers and retailers in deciding how much phosphorus a person can afford for the yield goals they set.”
Retailers are managing these challenges on multiple fronts. Growers want to trim input costs, while fertilizer purchasing decisions have become increasingly difficult in an unpredictable market.
Balancing Cost Savings with Future Productivity
While reducing phosphorus applications may offer short-term savings, many production regions are harvesting strong crops. Those yields remove significant amounts of phosphorus from the soil, making nutrient replacement an important part of maintaining future productivity.
“If you take a high yield off a field, you’ve got to replace what that crop removed,” Schwartz explains. “If you don’t put any back on, you’re risking the output of future crops.”
Rather than eliminating phosphorus applications, Schwartz believes growers should focus on getting more value from every pound applied.
“There’s a happy medium that can be reached,” he says, noting that modest reductions in phosphorus rates may be possible when growers have a strategy to improve phosphorus availability.
A Dual-Action Approach to Phosphorus Efficiency
One option is Verdesian’s Phree-uP®, a dual-action phosphorus efficiency technology designed to help protect applied phosphorus while also unlocking phosphorus already bound in the soil.
Schwartz says Phree-uP combines two technologies. Verdesian’s established XCHAIN™ Technology helps protect applied phosphorus from becoming unavailable, while proprietary MAC Tech® works to unlock phosphorus already tied up in the soil.
Together, the two technologies help improve access to phosphorus from both current applications and existing soil reserves, supporting greater phosphorus availability throughout the growing season.
An Opportunity for Retailers
For retailers, that creates an opportunity to deliver additional value by helping growers navigate a difficult economic environment without sacrificing long-term fertility goals.
Schwartz notes that some growers are exploring ways to cut phosphorus rates by 20 to 30 percent while maintaining crop performance. Technologies that improve nutrient efficiency can help support that strategy by increasing phosphorus availability to the crop.
For many growers, strategies that improve phosphorus availability offer benefits beyond economics. While cost savings are a primary driver of phosphorus management decisions today, stewardship remains an important part of the conversation. By helping crops make better use of applied and existing soil phosphorus, improved phosphorus efficiency can support water quality goals by reducing the potential for excess applications while maintaining productivity.
Avoid the “Cold Turkey” Approach
As retailers prepare recommendations for the next season, Schwartz encourages conversations around efficiency rather than elimination.
“That is not the best answer, to just go cold turkey,” he stresses. “There are solutions out there that will keep growers at yield levels they want to achieve and not pull down their phosphorus levels to where it’s going to penalize them in the future.”
For retailers working through grower fertility plans this fall, the message is straightforward: phosphorus remains too valuable to waste and increasingly too expensive not to optimize. Technologies that improve phosphorus availability and use efficiency can help growers protect yield potential while making every fertilizer dollar work harder.
