The Last Mile of Agronomy: Turning Recommendations Into Field Reality
Agriculture has made a lot of progress in generating insights for growers and agronomists. Between remote sensing, weather models, agronomic expertise and many other data layers, growers have access to more data to support their recommendations than ever before.
But there is a growing realization across the industry: recommendations alone do not create outcomes. The real challenge lies in what happens after the recommendation is made.
In previous articles, I explored how agriculture is moving from data aggregation to decision-making, and why field intelligence must be connected to compliance. Both conversations point to the same reality: value is only created when insights translate into action. This is what we call the last mile of agronomy.
Consider a common scenario: an agronomist identifies disease pressure in a field and recommends a fungicide application. The recommendation is sound. The timing is critical. The grower agrees. Yet, between recommendation and execution, numerous things can go wrong. The application may be delayed due to labor constraints. Product substitutions may occur. Weather conditions may shift. Documentation may be incomplete. Weeks later, everyone remembers the recommendation, but no one has a complete record of what actually happened.
The recommendation was correct, but the outcome fell short. This execution gap remains one of the least discussed challenges in digital agriculture. For years, technology providers focused on generating more insights. Today, the opportunity is different. The industry needs stronger connections between agronomic recommendations, operational workflows, and field activities.
When recommendations exist separately from execution records, organizations lose visibility. Agronomists cannot easily verify whether recommendations were followed. Farm managers struggle to understand why outcomes differed from expectations. Compliance teams spend valuable time reconstructing events after the fact. Most importantly: opportunities for continuous improvement are lost.
By contrast, when recommendations, work orders, field activities, and records are connected within a single workflow, something powerful happens. Every decision gains context, every activity becomes traceable, and every outcome becomes measurable. This benefits everyone involved.
Growers gain confidence that critical recommendations are implemented correctly and on time. Agronomists can evaluate not only what they recommended, but what was actually executed. Retailers and advisors strengthen accountability and improve service delivery. Compliance teams gain access to accurate records generated through daily operations rather than assembled retrospectively. The result is a more complete understanding of farm performance.
As agriculture continues its digital transformation, success will not be determined by who generates the most data or the most recommendations. It will be determined by who can consistently connect intelligence with execution. The future of agronomy is not simply about better advice.
