Phospholutions Releases Life Cycle Assessment Demonstrating a Nearly 50% Decrease in Phosphorus Fertilizer Carbon Emissions

Phospholutions Inc., a pioneer in sustainable fertilizer technology, has announced industry-leading carbon reduction in phosphorus fertilizer production following a comprehensive life cycle assessment (LCA) of their RhizoSorb technology conducted by Sustainable Solutions Corporation. This assessment, comparing cradle to gate comparison of traditional monoammonium phosphate (MAP) and examining the overall life cycle of annual corn production, marks a significant milestone in the company’s objective to develop solutions for sustainable and responsible use of phosphorus.

The LCA findings highlight substantial environmental benefits of RhizoSorb 8-39-0, the company’s fertilizer product. Notably, the reduction in phosphoric acid and ammonia used in fertilizer production with RhizoSorb technology decreases carbon emissions by nearly 50%. By replacing energy-intensive materials with more efficient and sustainable alternatives, this innovative product significantly decreases raw material environmental footprints, manufacturing resources, and transportation requirements.

The study reveals that, in a direct comparison to MAP, RhizoSorb 8-39-0 exhibits a 45.2% reduction in global warming potential. Extrapolating these results to the broader scale of corn production in the United States, the adoption of RhizoSorb 8-39-0 could prevent a staggering 3.4 billion kg CO2 eq emissions. This significant reduction is equivalent to removing emissions from more than 700,000 cars annually.

The results from the assessment demonstrate how Phospholutions strengthens global food security and increases farmer profitability by improving fertilizer efficiency and reducing environmental impact.

“It has always been our mission to create more sustainable fertilizers that reduce the carbon footprint and impacts to water quality. Not only do fertilizer manufacturers have an opportunity to extend the life of these finite resources, but also extract more value per unit of phosphorus while being better stewards of the environment. It’s good for industry and the environment,” said Hunter Swisher, CEO and Founder at Phospholutions.

Utilizing the same application methods of traditional granulated fertilizers, RhizoSorb 8-39-0 has cascading effects throughout the fertilizer lifecycle, significantly reducing manufacturing ozone impacts by 51% and transportation emissions by 10%, leading to meaningful reductions in smog formation and acidification by 34.7% in highly impacted geographic locations. RhizoSorb 8-39-0 reduces the need for overapplication of phosphorus fertilizers protecting freshwater systems and decreases eutrophication by 40%. In a third-party study by The New Zealand Institute for Plant and Food Research, RhizoSorb fertilizers decrease run-off potential by 78%.

“The significant findings of the LCA present a compelling case for the efficacy of RhizoSorb 8-39-0 in fostering sustainable agricultural practices. As Phospholutions continues its mission to develop and promote environmentally conscious farming solutions, the company aims to conduct further studies to support these impactful results,” according to Chief Operations Officer and Vice President of Sustainability, Stephan Levitsky.
