13 Spray Tips and Nozzles for Custom Application Work
When it comes to managing spray drift on a daily basis, custom applicators have a number of things to consider before heading out to the field. What is the current wind speed? What is the boom height? What is the distance from susceptible vegetative? But perhaps one of the most important aspects applicators should keep in mind is the fact that droplet size is directly correlated to spray efficacy, especially when it relates to herbicides such as dicamba. Choosing the right nozzles can help you apply the right droplet size.

Hypro 3D
Pentair Hypro
The Hypro 3D nozzle is an inclined, all-purpose nozzle that is compatible with pulse-width modulation (PWM). According to the company, it has been shown to reduce drift by 60% to 75%, compared with flat-fan nozzles. -

TurboDrop D Version Nozzles
Greenleaf Technologies
The Greenleaf D versions of the TurboDrop nozzles were designed with dicamba, 2-4-D, and glyphosate in mind, where a coarser spray is desirable. Operating between 30 and 90 psi, these nozzles deliver ultra-coarse (UC), extremely coarse (XC), and very coarse (VC) droplets for maximum drift control. The D version of the TurboDrop DualFan has the ability to cover the target from two to four angles of attack, further enhancing chemical performance, says the company. The D nozzles employ TurboDrop Venturi Technology to inject air and create a larger, more uniform droplet spectrum, the company adds. The pattern tips are larger in comparison to those of the standard TDXL and DualFan nozzles, which results in a greater pressure drop and a larger overall droplet size. -

COMBO-Jet UR Series
Wilger
The COMBO-JET UR Series is a new dual-chamber drift-reduction-designed spray tip that is compatible with all pulse-width modulation spraying systems. It produces significantly coarser spray than the COMBO-JET DR series for new chemical applications that have a very high sensitivity to drift (such as dicamba herbicides). -

CP Air Stop Turbo Floater Nozzle
CP Products
The CP Air Stop Turbo Floater has a fast-air shut-off check valve with a built-in nozzle, says the company. It shuts off within seconds, with no leaks or drips. Operators can save on chemical loss from other bladder pinch valves. The nozzle produces droplets from medium to ultra-coarse. -

Turbo TeeJet Induction (TTI) Spray Tip
TeeJet Technologies
This air-induction, single flat spray tip primarily produces droplets in the UC (ultra-coarse) and XC (extremely coarse) range, across the full range of capacities and operating pressures. Driftable fines of less than 2% is typical. New sizes have been added at the high end of the range (-08 and -10 capacities). -

AirMix
Greenleaf Technologies
The AirMix nozzle is a compact, economical air-injection nozzle designed to provide both drift control and surface coverage at conventional spray pressures, according to the company. It is available in four configurations: AM Low Pressure, Dual Venturi, Acid Resistant Venturi, and Low Drift Off Center. To help reduce plugging, the AirMix uses a unique air cleaning system. -

Ultra Lo-Drift
Pentair Hypro
Hypro’s Ultra Lo-Drift (ULD) spray tips have large air-centered droplets that provide superior resistance to drift, the company says. They produce XC and UC droplets across a wide pressure range, making them ideal for 2,4-D and dicamba spraying, the company adds. They are also approved for use on many new chemical labels. -

TurboDrop Variable Rate-Fertilizer-Nozzles
Greenleaf Technologies
Turbodrop Variable Rate fertilizer nozzles are designed to apply liquid fertilizer at a 4X to 5X flow-rate range to allow for varying requirements of the target crop, says the company. They are available in a six-hole streaming version (TDVRF) for use on standard sprayers, and a hosebard version (TDVRHB) for tool bars, nitrogen applicators, and other dedicated fertilizer rigs. Turbodrop Variable Rate nozzles may be operated from 10 to 140 psi, allowing up to a 5X rate change at a given speed. Additionally, the TDVRF and TDVRHB can maintain a constant gpa rate over a 5X speed change. The TDVRF and TDVRHB are now “airless,” providing a wider operating range, and eliminating the possibility of fertilizer spitting from the side, says the company. -

COMBO-Jet DR Series
Wilger
The COMBO-JET DR Series is a drift-reduction spray tip and one of the only recommended drift-reduction spray tips for pulse-width modulation (PMW) spraying systems. It produces significantly coarser spray than the COMBO-JET MR Series, the company says, reducing drift from a conventional flat-fan spray tip by approximately 90%. -

COMBO-Jet MR Series
Wilger
The COMBO-JET MR Series is a very popular drift-reduction spray tip, the company says, and one of the only recommended drift-reduction spray tips for pulse-width modulation (PWM) spraying systems. It produces significantly coarser spray than the COMBO-JET SR series, reducing drift from a conventional flat-fan spray tip by approximately 75%, according to the company. -

TTI TwinJet (TTI60) Spray Tip
TeeJet Technologies
This air-induction, twin-flat spray tip went into production at the end of 2016. It has some strong similarities to the TTI tip in terms of the ultra-coarse (UC) and extremely coarse (XC) droplets produced. It produces even fewer driftable fines — less than 1.5% is typical — and offers exceptionally good drift control. The twin pattern offers the advantage of improved coverage and canopy penetration for post-emerge applications. A combined tip/cap design allows for faster, easier installation. TeeJet anticipates approval for next season for use with new-generation dicamba products. -

SoftDrop
Greenleaf Technologies
The SoftDrop nozzle is a non-air-inducted spray tip designed to produce extremely coarse droplets for maximum drift control with auxin herbicides such as dicamba. The nozzle can work with pulse-width modulation (PWM) or blended pulse systems, operating between 10 and 50 Hz. The SoftDrop can also be used with liquid fertilizers or mixtures of liquid fertilizers and herbicides, the company says. -

TipGuard System for AirMix Nozzles
Greenleaf Technologies
Greenleaf Technologies has a TipGuard System designed to fit the company’s AirMix low-pressure air injection nozzles. The TipGuard System protects vulnerable spray nozzles from damage caused by contact with the ground, fence posts, and other obstructions. The ability to stack the TipGuard and AirMix assemblies allows for quick and easy installation on the sprayer boom, especially when wearing gloves, the company says.
