It’s been said that “nothing runs like a Deere.” But in 2013, nothing seemed to stop traffic at the annual Midwest AG Industries Exposition (MAGIE) like a Deere.

At this year’s MAGIE, attendees had the opportunity to vote for the one product featured at the show that literally “stopped them in their tracks to take a closer look.” The ShowStopper Award was started seven years ago as a joint venture between CropLife IRON magazine and MAGIE sponsor the Illinois Fertilizer & Chemical Association (IFCA). The purpose of this trophy was to recognize the most-traffic stopping product at each year’s MAGIE show. For the past two years, attendees have cast ballots during the early hours of MAGIE’s first day for their favorite piece of equipment.

“The ShowStopper Award was started as a way to acknowledge the hard work that not only goes into making some of the finest products in the ag equipment industry, but how these brands are received by their target audiences,” said Eric Sfiligoj, editor of CropLife.

Stopping Power

At the 2013 MAGIE, the voting was close between several products, but in the end, the new R4038 self-propelled sprayer took the ShowStopper Award honor.

“Thank you from all of us at John Deere for this award,” said Casey Dray, marketing representative, John Deere Ag Management Solutions, accepting the trophy at the MAGIE Tailgate Party on August 21.

The 1,000-gallon R4038 Sprayer replaces the 4830 sprayer in John Deere’s product line-up. It features a 310-hp, 9-L PowerTech Plus PSS Final Tier 4 engine with a four-wheel hydrostatic drive that can operate up to 25 mph in the field and 35 mph in transport.

Other features of the R4038 include redesigned flat-fold booms in widths up to 120 feet, improved weight distribution and a CommandView II cab with the fully-integrated GreenStar3 2630 display. Cruise control allows the system to automatically control the vehicle to the operator’s target speed when the operator sets the engine speed and hydro handle at maximum positions.  It can also be converted to dry nutrient applicators by installing the 200-cubic foot New Leader dry spinner spreader.

The R4038 also comes with Integrated Direct Injection. According to the company, this option provides the flexibility to change products between crops and manage chemical risk by allowing the operator to carry up to 135 gallons of up to two raw chemicals outside of the primary solution tank.

Integrated technologies to further enhance productivity include AutoTrac, BoomTrac Pro, John Deere Section Control, JDLink (enabling Remote Display Access and Service ADVISOR Remote), John Deere Mobile Weather and AgLogic
