Cultivating Tomorrow: DPH Bio CEO on Setting a Path for Growth and Impact Today
Editor’s note: “Cultivating Tomorrow” is a special series that shares insights from C-suite executives at leading AgTech companies, presented by AgTech PR. Its aim is to highlight the experiences of AgTech leaders driving agricultural transformation today. In this installment, Mick Messman, CEO at DPH Bio, says while challenges facing our industry are significant, so too are the opportunities for those willing to embrace change, simplify their approach, and focus on what truly matters.
In the past year, our company made a pivotal choice that set us on a path to growth and to deliver meaningful impact for growers. These decisions, rooted in our mantra of – ‘Simplify. Focus. Scale.’ – have not only redefined our trajectory but also solidified our commitment to sustainable agriculture.
Recent global uncertainties, including fluctuating commodity prices and tighter margins at all levels, have significantly altered the landscape for American agriculture and thereby put more pressure on biological companies. More than ever, market share is even more directly correlated to ability to demonstrate the most competitive ROI – also called value.
Regardless of the headwinds, as an industry, we must find ways to support strategic innovation and become even more adaptable to ensure we continue to meet domestic and global demands for agricultural products, specifically biologicals. The path forward requires all of us to develop resilient, sustainable solutions and form new kinds of collaborations that can thrive. A great place to start is at home – in our own businesses.
The Power of Simplification
Simplifying a business is rarely an easy task. It requires a clear vision, unwavering commitment, and often difficult choices. As Steve Jobs once said, “Simple can be harder than complex: You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple. But it’s worth it in the end because once you get there, you can move mountains.”
This philosophy resonated deeply with us at DPH Bio as we made the bold decision to divest our synthetic fertilizer portfolio. While this segment was complex and revenue-generating, we recognized that true innovation and long-term success lay in streamlining our focus. By simplifying our portfolio around our biological platforms, RegenAphex and BioControls, we positioned ourselves for success with the biologicals revolution in agriculture.
Focusing on a Balanced Approach
With our simplified portfolio, the next step was to sharpen our focus on developing a farmer-first, science-based biologicals portfolio to compete in the increasingly competitive biologicals market. This approach was not just about creating products; rather fostering a balanced ecosystem that benefits partners, retailers, farmers, consumers, and the environment alike.
Built on RegenAphex technology, TerraTrove SP-1 Classic and our latest innovation AmplAphex exemplify this balanced approach by delivering readily available carbon and a consortium of microorganisms that improve soil health and support plant health. This focus on regenerative solutions aligns perfectly with the growing market demand for a more sustainable food system.
Scaling Through Collaboration
Successful agtech companies understand that the road to commercialization has many twists and turns. With a simplified portfolio and focused approach, we concluded that collaborations with partners and customers was the most efficient and credible way to ensure that our innovations got in front of growers. As a mid-sized independent young company, it’s not practical to have a salesforce for every county – making strategic commercial partnerships key to growth. We believe that by working together, we can accelerate the transition to a more balanced biological approach in agriculture.
Fostering a Culture of Innovation
Here are three tips to build an agtech company that can weather market dynamics:
- Embrace Simplicity: Simplifying your portfolio allows the entire team to concentrate efforts on the most innovative and impactful products. Regularly assess your offerings and be willing to make tough decisions that align with your core mission.
- Uncover New Paths to Scale: Transparency starting at the top is key to building trust and encouraging bold ideas. Having diverse experience and strong industry relationships is key to uncovering the optimal path to commercialize quickly.
- Collaborate: Agriculture has always been a team sport. Collaboration at local, regional and even global levels are key to building a vibrant ag ecosystem. It’s even more true today when developing and scaling technology faster is paramount to our collective success.
As we look to the future, we remain committed to the mission to simplify, focus, and scale. Our journey over the past year has reinforced our belief in the power of bold decisions aligned with a clear vision. As we continue to cultivate tomorrow, we remain dedicated to delivering value to farmers, advancing innovation in biologicals, and contributing to a more sustainable and productive agricultural ecosystem. The challenges facing our industry are significant, but so too are the opportunities for those willing to embrace change, simplify their approach, and focus on what truly matters.
