Ohio Corn And Wheat Growers Association, Ohio Soybean Association Support House Bill 61

The Ohio Corn & Wheat Growers Association (OCWGA) and Ohio Soybean Association (OSA) truly appreciate the comprehensive approach and diligent work that the Ohio House of Representatives has dedicated to addressing water quality and House Bill (HB) 61.

Farmers take great pride in growing food for their neighbors, take very seriously their responsibility to environmental sustainability and are dedicated to maintaining healthy waterways important to all Ohioans.

OCWGA and OSA support HB 61 because it takes a measured and realistic look at agronomic practices, as well as addressing issues with water treatment facilities and the dumping of dredge material in one of Ohio’s most valued resources – Lake Erie. The bill also prohibits, with appropriate exemptions, the application of nitrogen and phosphorus on frozen and snow-covered ground as that practice is not recommended by science. This is a complex issue and requires a hard look at all factors and sources in order to find solutions that work.
