BCC, Inc. of Lubbock, TX, is the 2010 National Land Use Management Environmental Respect award winner. Bio Mediation Contractors and Consultants (BCC) has been serving Texas and six neighboring states for 20 years. “We have 500 customers in the region,” says President Randy L. Andrews. “Our customer list includes public utilities, private land owners and oil, gas, pipeline, and telecommunications companies.”
Doing business deep in the heart of Texas means the job of keeping 110-square-foot oil well sites free of weeds takes the BCC crews to urban neighborhoods, school grounds, and farm fields. “We spray 30,000 oil wells each year,” he says.
Most of the BCC crew are 10-year veterans of the company. They receive regular monthly training sessions about safety issues and newly labeled products. But perhaps the most important training, according to Andrews, occurs every morning. “Our days start about 6 a.m., and there is usually a short training session going on then. Sometimes it’s about a new herbicide being used that day or an environmental or road hazard that could be encountered at the job site. When we go out there, we have to know what product to use, when to use it and how to use it,” he says.
There is no substitute for experience in this business, explains Andrews. “You can’t put people with no experience in urban situations. During the hour it might take to spray an electrical sub station, it is not unusual for 500 people to pass by the job site. Environmental respect is everything in situations like these.”
