Tips for Treating Seed on the Farm

Seed treatments have become an invaluable tool for farmers, and industry analysts say it is more important than ever for seed companies and retailers to provide seed treatment stewardship, writes Shannon Schindle on American-Seed.com.

According to Kerry Grossweiler, Bayer CropScience seedgrowth equipment and coatings manager, there are many aspects for farmers to consider when it comes to choosing the right seed treatment. “Producers should talk to an expert,” explains Grossweiler. “They need to visit their local seed dealer, ag retailer or Bayer representative and discuss on-farm pressures — whether that is disease or pests — and find the right product for their local conditions.”

While seed treatments are important, so is seed cleaning and conditioning. “You are already investing in a high-value product for its traits and germplasm to provide high yield benefits,” Grossweiler says. “Seed quality and conditioning are the important first step in the process.”
