Can Adjuvants Impact ROI? The Data Says Yes.
There are many practical reasons to add an adjuvant to the tank: to get more product down into the canopy, to improve plant uptake, to reduce drift. Sometimes they’re even required by the label to reduce volatility. Adjuvants make good practical sense, but do you ever experience a need for more cold, hard data to sell an adjuvant to a grower?
WinField® United ran robust trials, crunched the numbers and, according to the data, adjuvants generate a sizable ROI your customers will appreciate this season.
Adjuvant Impact By The Numbers
In a series of field trials, a tank mix of clethodim plus glyphosate was tested against a tank mix of those same two chemistries plus Destiny® HC adjuvant, a top-tier, high surfactant oil concentrate, methylated soybean oil. The tank mix with Destiny HC boasted an 8 bushel per acre yield advantage compared to the one without,1 leading to an additional $116 in revenue per acre.2 At a cost of about $3 per acre, Destiny HC is a workhorse adjuvant that can turn a few bucks into $100+.
Adjuvants have proven their value with fungicide applications as well. Data shows a 5.7 bushel per acre average yield increase in corn when MasterLock® adjuvant is added to the spray tank along with a fungicide, compared to using a fungicide alone.3 At today’s corn prices,4 that’s an additional $44 per acre in your growers’ pockets come harvest.
Tackling Problems, Finding Solutions
While farmers are getting concerned about their herbicide and fungicide options, you can help calm their nerves by recommending high-quality adjuvants as part of their spray programs.
“We’ve done the research to help maximize weed control and enhance yield potential when using our adjuvants,” said Andy Braunshausen, vice president of crop protection marketing for WinField United. “Why is that important? The label tells you only so much. We have control over the ingredients, all the way through handling and formulation.”
WinField United research goes well beyond product development to target matters like selecting and calibrating sprayer nozzles. This helps ensure consistent coverage across the entire spray boom and, ultimately, the entire field.
“While this may sound simple, there are many nozzle types and sizes available with little information about which one is best for which application, so selection can get overwhelming,” said Braunshausen. “In short, you want to ensure applications are landing where they’re supposed to land and doing what they’re supposed to do once they get there.”
