Teamwork Leads to an Easy Switch
Trying something new on the farm can be intimidating. Luckily, there is no I in team. For Indiana corn and soybean producer Gary Hendrix, the support he receives from his retailer has helped him take his operation to new heights.
Ben Wiatt, agronomy specialist for Keystone Cooperative, has been working with Hendrix since 2018. Over the past six years, Wiatt and Hendrix have developed a trusted relationship — one that, Wiatt said, didn’t happen overnight.
“When we first started working together, Gary and I went through a lot of product portfolios and walked a lot of plots,” Wiatt said. “We were working to make the right decisions for his farm together. Inch by inch, Gary started trusting me. I worked hard to show him the value in new opportunities. Now, I feel like I know Gary’s acres just as well as he does.”
When a new opportunity came to the market in 2020, Wiatt researched the performance and genetics bred into the lineup of Brevant® seeds. Wiatt said he starts off small when making a new recommendation — encouraging producers to try a new variety or hybrid on 80 or less acres. That is how Wiatt and Hendrix started with Brevant® brand products.
“Ben has always taken care of me,” Hendrix said. “He is the one doing the research, making the recommendations and ensuring that we are placing the best-fitting products on my acres. Ben also does my spraying, so he always knows what my fields need as far as herbicides go.”
After planting Brevant brand corn and soybeans, Wiatt said, Hendrix was an early adopter of the Enlist® weed control system. In addition to Wiatt’s recommendation, a history of intense weed pressure and spray difficulties made Hendrix take the step toward something new.
“Gary and I evaluated the performance from the Enlist system and put it to the test with Brevant seeds,” Wiatt said. “When you look across the field and it’s spotless, it’s hard to argue against. That made for an easy switch.”
The proven results from the Enlist weed control system and Brevant seeds have made for streamlined management and a simpler harvest, which is why Hendrix said he plans to continue planting Brevant brand soybeans and using Enlist® herbicides. He began to see consistent yield potential from his fields of Brevant brand Enlist E3® soybeans that allowed him to make more-informed decisions, such as seed selection, on his operation. Likewise, keeping fields clean with the Enlist weed control system allows for more-efficient passes during harvest.
“I can think back to 25 years ago, and you never had a clean field,” Hendrix said. “But the newer genetics from Brevant seeds are solid. I know what kind of yield my Brevant brand soybeans are going to get. Coupled with the Enlist trait, I also know those fields are going to be so much nicer to harvest because they’re clean.”
