Set the tone for seed decisions
Before making seed decisions for the next season, retailers should meet with their seed advisers to make sure their farmers are bringing in top yields. But what can retailers expect to hear from their seed advisers?
“When we visit with retailers, we want to make sure their customers have the best opportunity to make the maximum return on investment,” said John Long, retail product agronomist for Brevant® seeds.
Long recommends that retailers work with their trusted seed advisers to calibrate a plan for farmers in their area. This collaboration builds confidence and expands knowledge about products and how to place them so farmers have the most success.
Validation of What Works
Retailers want to know what is working and what isn’t at the end of each season. To detect product performance, Brevant seeds experts study data from IMPACT™ (Intensively Managed Product Advancement, Characterization and Training ) plots. As part of an extensive plot system by Corteva Agriscience, these localized plots replicate real-world growing conditions. Morgan Paine, retail product agronomist for Brevant seeds, said monitoring these plots and the yield data help her customers make decisions for the following year. Long said giving farmer feedback to retailers serves as another way to validate that Brevant brand products work in a variety of growing environments.
Excitement for New Products and Trait Packages
As farmers start to make seed decisions, it’s essential to look at the full acre. That includes looking at what new technology is coming to market. Long said he likes to share his excitement for new Brevant brand products in the lineup, including industry-leading corn traits and next-generation Enlist E3® soybean varieties. Having more options to bring to the farm raises the level of agronomic success for the customer.
“Our genetic gain is dependent on how quickly and how accurately we characterize and select products,” Paine said. “So we are releasing new products and traits every year to help improve our Brevant seeds lineup.”
Ensuring a Base Foundation
Finally, reviewing conditions and looking into the fertility of a farm is critical in setting the tone for the next crop year. As Long puts it, a sound fertility program can provide a crop environment that is better equipped to handle stress.
“Without knowing what next year looks like, we want to do everything we can to mitigate stress,” Long said. “Making sure that we talk with retailers about improving farmers’ crop fertility program across their farm is key.”
2022 provided an array of challenges — weather conditions, disease pressure and everything in between. Through those setbacks, ag retail has never wavered in its dedication to the farmer — which is just another reason why Brevant seeds works together with ag retail.
