Improve Speed of Kill of Resistant Weeds Like Palmer Amaranth and Common Waterhemp.
INCLUDE TOUGH® 5EC IN THE TANK AND IMPROVE RESISTANT WEED CONTROL
TOUGH® 5EC (Pyridate) works by blocking a weed’s photosystem II process, triggering the release of toxic forms of oxygen and causing rapid cell wall degradation. Pyridate is a highly effective mode of action in corn and shows increased levels of weed control in tank-mix combinations including both HPPD’s (Mesotrione) and Atrazine.
- Pyridate is applied after emergence of the weed.
- Pyridate is quickly absorbed by the leaves (rain-fast within 60 minutes).
- Pyridate blocks photosystem II of the weed by irreversibly binding to the D1 protein and inhibiting the transport of electrons. High energy electrons then interact with oxygen, producing toxic forms of oxygen.
- The toxic forms of oxygen interact and degrade the cell’s membranes resulting in necrosis (browning) and ultimate death to the weed.
TOUGH® 5EC SYNERGIZES HPPD’s
TOUGH® 5EC is an ideal tank mix partner, as a resistance management tool, with HPPD inhibitors. As mentioned earlier, research published in Pest Management Science shows the fast metabolism of Mesotrione (Fig 1). HPPD’s work by inhibiting the plant’s ability to detoxify the toxic forms of oxygen.
Coupled with TOUGH® 5EC’s increasing the level of toxic oxygen molecules, it’s a one-two-punch the plant cannot overcome. Because of the rapid metabolism in these resistant weeds, it’s imperative to get both herbicides into the leaves together as fast as possible; TOUGH® 5EC is the PSII to accomplish that! Therefore, when TOUGH® 5EC herbicide is added to the HPPD, there is a synergistic effect with an increased charge in your post emergence weed control program. This mix offers rapid and more control of your broadleaf weeds including resistant Common Waterhemp, Palmer Amaranth, Pigweed and Giant Ragweed. Field research has shown adding TOUGH® 5EC to the mix, improves performance; promoting faster weed death and overcoming HPPD resistance (Fig. 2).
TOUGH® 5EC COMPLEMENTS ATRAZINE
Research has shown significant improvement in control of resistant weeds when TOUGH® 5EC is added to tank mix combinations. While both Atrazine and Pyridate are PSII Inhibitors, Atrazine is a Group 5, herbicide that is primarily absorbed through the soil. Therefore, it binds with the D1 protein at a different site, offering a dual mode of action. Pyridate has fast foliar absorption to get to the target site but also degrades rapidly in the soil to prevent carry over concerns. Atrazine has slow leaf absorption and primarily works through root absorption which requires moisture.
In addition, studies conducted at the University of Illinois reveal the fast metabolism of Atrazine (Fig. 3); growers can maximize the PSII class when TOUGH® 5EC is added to the mix.
In a trial done in 2020 by Dr. Bill Johnson at Purdue University, the three products were combined resulting in a fast kill, complete control of weeds and preventing seeds going into the weed soil seedbank (Fig. 4)!
