The Perfect Pairing
As retailers work with their growers to evaluate the successes and challenges of the 2022 growing season, issues like weed control and resistance remain top of mind. The right soybean variety and herbicide pairing is a critical foundation of a successful season, and the job of a retailer is to help farmers find that perfect match.
Helping growers bring in top yields begins with assisting them in getting the products they need. After having dealt with late planting, supply issues, drought and increased weed and disease pressure, retailers want to be able to make their growers’ lives easier.
Cole Carda, Seed Manager at Simplot Grower Solutions in Aberdeen, South Dakota, says his soybean growers are looking for consistency in their seed brands. “They want to know they are supported and can count on a program that provides a good, consistent product year after year,” he said.
When helping growers choose soybean seed, it’s important to first evaluate the level of weed pressure in fields and consider the driver weeds, says Marc Hoobler, U.S. soybean agronomy lead for BASF Agricultural Solutions. According to a recent study conducted by Kynetec for BASF, two-thirds of farmers are “extremely concerned” about Palmer amaranth.
In order to focus on trouble weeds like Palmer amaranth and waterhemp, Hoobler recommends the following best practices for using an Enlist E3® Soybean herbicide program:
- Use multiple, effective sites of action to prevent weed resistance
- Target small weeds (<3″) with timely applications
- Use residual herbicides pre- and post-emergence for residual control until canopy
Enlist E3® soybeans will provide tolerance to Liberty herbicide, 2,4-D choline salt and glyphosate in a three-gene stack, setting a new standard for weed control and yield performance in soybeans.
With Xitavo soybean seed, owned by M.S. Technologies and distributed exclusively by BASF, retailers can feel confident that they’re being backed by BASF’s expert advice, consistent and proven local performance, and on-farm support.
BASF provides retailers and growers with support that extends beyond the crop. Seed agronomists and agronomic solutions advisors consult with crop protection, technical service, and seed treatment field representatives to give growers customized advice and recommendations for their fields.
