Building on Precision Agriculture’s Foundations

In the 1980s, precision agriculture focused on variable fertilizer placement for agronomic crops to increase yields and improve efficiency input utilization. Since then, decades of dramatic advances in technology, systems, and platforms, are now expanding in specialty agriculture markets, enabling integrated systems to interconnect from farm to retail. This migration has broadened the industry from an in-field focus on precision application to now fully integrated ag technology solutions with autonomous equipment, rural broadband, handheld devices, inter-connectivity, data collection, and other technology with great potential.

Another change in the industry is its expansion. The North American market had been the early global leader developing these capabilities with the thousands of acres of agronomic crops through the heartland well suited for farm equipment systems. Now, the ag tech industry has expanded around the world. These systems are designed to provide the most efficient crop solution in utilizing scarce resources of labor, water, and land.

Creating Ag Tech Community

A critical element of the Global Ag Tech Initiative is bringing together thought leaders, advocates, growers, agronomists, and ag retailers to discuss advancements, issues, and developments to move the industry forward.

“Through a portfolio of events and informative products, the Initiative provides opportunities to connect the industry with multiple touchpoints ranging from market intelligence to research to thought leadership. This portfolio, in collaboration with agricultural and non-endemic stakeholders, encourages sharing of information, networking, and global opportunities to forward the adoption and realize the promise of ag tech globally,” says Renee Targos, Program Director of the Global Ag Tech Initiative. “The ag tech industry needs advocates, community, and connections to expand the vision and acceptance for how technology can improve agricultural practices to better feed the world.”
