CropLife 100 40th Anniversary: Rankings Unveiled for the 2023 Top U.S. Ag Retailers

In 1984, the editors of CropLife (then known as Farm Chemicals magazine) decided to celebrate the magazine’s 90th anniversary by showcasing the organizations that they covered: ag retailers. In a special issue that year, they compiled a list of the nation’s top dealerships and cooperatives. With this, what is now known as the CropLife 100, was born! Today, CropLife magazine has once again published its CropLife 100, a 40th anniversary of the original listing of the largest U.S. ag retailers ranked by sales.

Forty years ago, the sales range for the companies on the CropLife 100 was between $5 million and $80 million. In 2023, annual sales in the $80 million range would land an ag retailer in the mid-60s out of the 100 largest companies, with 59 ag retailers on the 2023 listings recording yearly sales of more than $100 million.

The growth in the ag retail market over the years has been impressive, says Editor Eric Sfiligoj. “Back at the start of the 21st century in 2000, the nation’s top ag retailers had overall revenues of $10.9 billion,” he says. “According to the 2023 CropLife 100 survey, this figure has skyrocketed over the past 23 years, now topping out at $46.7 billion – more than $35 billion higher! Better still, compared with 2022, CropLife 100 ag retailers increased their annual revenues by almost 2% year-over-year.”
