Solum Ames Lab Open For Business

Agriculture is an ingrained into the Central Iowa landscape as any other industry. Scattered among the growing industrial parkways and ag-based business buildings of the cities of Ames and Des Moines are miles of farmland, featuring everything from cattle to corn.

And it was in part this agricultural heritage, says Nick Koshnick, co-founder and CEO for Solum, Inc., that convinced the Mountain View, CA-based company to open a new 12,500-square-foot research facility in Ames.

“This new state-of-the-art facility we are opening represents a commitment to the community and the agricultural industry,” said Koshnick at the September 7 ribbon-cutting for the new lab. “We intend to build upon the services we are providing here for months and years to come.”

Utilizing Solum’s moist soil-testing methods, the Ames facility is now in the process of receiving commercial samples for the fall 2012 season and beyond. The facility has already received its state soil laboratory certifications from both Iowa and Minnesota.

Furthermore, added Koshnick, the facility will utilize the latest technology to allow customers to access their sample data online. “Agriculture has really changed,” he said. “We’ve surged forward with technology. This has led to a new understanding of agronomic principles, and we are at the forefront of this revolution.”
