Seminar Targets Making Improved Decisions

Leaders and managers responsible for strategic decision-making at businesses and organizations are invited to attend a seminar conducted by Purdue University’s Center for Food and Agricultural Business.

“Structuring Decisions: Innovating Through Turbulence” will focus on improving the decision-making process. The event will take place Sept. 15-17 on Purdue’s West Lafayette campus.

The program will help participants recognize new opportunities, clarify alternatives, and manage the downside risk in business decisions. Through lectures and hands-on activities, seminar leaders will provide examples of real-world situations.

"It’s our goal to help participants sharpen their decision-making skills and ensure that they can apply the new techniques and tools when they return to their offices," says Professor Allan Gray, Center for Food and Agricultural Business director and program instructor.

Gray will team up with Michael Boehlje, professor of agricultural economics and agribusiness management and finance expert, to deliver the seminar. Sessions include:

  • "Framework for Decision Making." How to define problems, set objectives ,and consider alternatives.
  • "Tools for Effective Decision Making." Identifying alternative consequences and uncertainty, outlining critical variables and defining potential outcomes in financial terms.
  • "Implementing the Decision." Learning from failure, knowing when to kill a project and how to avoid traps in decision-making.
