Seed Insurance Cost Dropping — For Some

Several seed companies are offering seed that will be eligible for reduced crop insurance premiums in select states next season.

Dow AgroSciences’ Mycogen brand hybrids with Herculex Xtra Insect Protection, including those stacked wth Roundup Ready Corn 2 technology. The BE program for the 2009 crop year will include non-irrigated grain corn hybrids with HERCULEX XTRA and HERCULEX XTRA stacked with Roundup Ready Corn 2 in the states of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

Monsanto’s corn hybrid seeds featuring YieldGard Plus with Roundup Ready Corn 2, YieldGard VT Triple, and YieldGard VT Triple PRO technology. In 2009 the program will be available in the following additional states: Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. These expansion states join the original four pilot states of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa and Minnesota.

John Deere Risk Protection, which insures growers against yield risks, and Syngenta and John Deere Risk Protection, which insures growers against yield risks, jointly submitted the insurance proposal to the FCIC earlier this year. The crop insurance premium discount for growers of Agrisure seeds will initially be offered in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Additional program details will be announced this fall.

DuPont’s Pioneer brand corn hybrids with the Herculex XTRA trait, including those stacked with the Roundup Ready Corn 2 trait,. This will include non-irrigated corn for grain in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. Herculex XTRA technology by Dow AgroSciences LLC and Pioneer is a combination of the Herculex I trait and Herculex RW rootworm protection .
