Pioneer Launches High-Value Soybean Trait
July 21, 2009 Pioneer Hi-Bred, a DuPont business, has unveiled the brand name for the high oleic soybean oil trait in its next generation of healthy soybean products. What’s the new name?
Pioneer has introduced Plenish as its high oleic soybean oil trait brand name. These varieties are on track for a limited introduction in the U.S. for 2010 planting, pending regulatory approval, and will be offered in a broad range of maturity groups. According to the company, they will bring more value to soybean growers in high-performing varieties and increased global competitiveness for the U.S. soybean industry.
“Developed through the Pioneer exclusive Accelerated Yield Technology (AYTTM) system and launched in the Y Series product line, these soybean varieties will have the key agronomic and defensive traits growers want, including resistance to SCN (soybean cyst nematode), Phytophthora, and SDS (Sudden Death Syndrome),” says John Muenzenberger, Pioneer business manager for specialty oils. “Also making it attractive to growers will be the opportunity to receive a premium for producing and segregating their high oleic crop.
“Plenish brand high oleic soybean oil will provide nutritionally enhanced oil with the highest oleic content in soybeans under commercial development,” adds Muenzenberger. “This meets food industry needs and consumer demand for a soy-based trans fat solution. Plenish high oleic soybean oil will provide the high stability and performance of partially hydrogenated oil that food companies need without the trans fat and with lower saturated fats.”
High oleic soybean oil also is an attractive option for food companies because of the existing production infrastructure for soybeans and soybean oil. Soybeans are grown on more acres in North America than any other oilseed crop.
There also are bio-based industrial applications for high oleic soy oil, including its use as a renewable and environmentally friendly option to petroleum-based products in a number of industrial applications. Examples include lubricants, foam products, liners, and other oleo-chemical applications.
The Plenish high oleic soybean oil trait received Canadian regulatory approval in May. Pioneer completed U.S. regulatory submissions for approval of the high oleic soybean oil trait in December 2006. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration completed its review of Plenish high oleic soybeans earlier this year and USDA is in the process of reviewing the trait. Regulatory submissions for the trait are planned or have been completed in key soybean importing countries around the world.
