New Canola Variety Stands Up To Weather, Weeds

The weed control and yield increase benefits of the BASF CLEARFIELD Production System are now available to a new segment of canola growers using new varieties released in the CROPLAN GENETICS brand.

Winfield Solutions LLC, based in Shoreview, MN, offers three herbicide-tolerant system choices for Brassica napus canola through the CROPLAN GENETICS brand and now offers the first herbicide-tolerant Brassica juncea canola variety for the United States under the brand XCEED. This trait, developed over seventeen years of plant breeding, allows growers to manage difficult weeds in fields planted with CROPLAN GENETICS brand seed with a simple and convenient, broad-spectrum weed control program.

CROPLAN GENETICS seed varieties are bred to reflect regional growing conditions and requirements, and are available only as certified, genetically-pure seed that offers better yield potential than bin-run seed. They have bred-in tolerance (non-GMO) to Beyond herbicide, which offers broad-spectrum, long-lasting weed control, excellent crop safety and an easier harvest.

“The increased heat and drought tolerance inherent in Brassica juncea CROPLAN GENETICS canola seed makes it ideal for producers in drier regions of the United States,” says Dr. Ryan Bond, technical market manager for the BASF CLEARFIELD Production System. “Combining these features with the yield increase benefits of CLEARFIELD has made Brassica juncea an extremely attractive crop for producers.”

Winfield Solutions, marketing the CROPLAN GENETICS brand, has an extensive network of agronomists and retailers throughout the country, with a significant number in the region to which Brassica juncea and Brassica napus canola are adapted and grown. Adding CLEARFIELD Brassica juncea varieties creates additional depth and options for grower segments facing challenging climate, weather, weed and disease pressures that have kept them from growing canola altogether.

“Our canola-quality XCEED Brassica juncea seed varieties offer better drought and heat tolerance and lower shattering than Brassica napus canola,” says Jay Bjerke, canola product manager, CROPLAN GENETICS brand canola. “This gives farmers outside of the current traditional canola growing area a new alternative to wheat.”

Weeds such as mustards, foxtails and cleavers have been a source of frustration for conventional canola growers in the past. Beyond herbicide has been shown to provide excellent control of these weeds, reducing competition to increase yields.

Combining management tools can help canola growers get the most out of every acre. “Growing CLEARFIELD canola is a whole-system approach that ensures growers a positive return on investment by marrying certified, genetically-pure seed with best-in-class Beyond herbicide to provide long lasting weed control for a range of troublesome weeds,” says Nocha Van Thielen, product manager for CLEARFIELD Production System. CLEARFIELD canola also may improve harvest efficiency via the ability to straight-cut the crop versus swathing, thereby adding more to the bottom line and improving time management on the farm.

Growers are required to sign the CLEARFIELD stewardship agreement, which helps them understand how to engage in best practices for using the BASF CLEARFIELD Production System. Stewardship practices include purchasing certified seed each season, strictly adhering to label directions, crop rotations and use of non-ALS inhibitor herbicides for burndown in fallow rotations.
