Manufacturers Come Together

Last season some of the major players in micronutrient market joined forces to form the Micronutrient Manufacturers Association (MMA) — though word of the group’s formation officially hit the press just this summer. Fertilizer industry veteran and former California Fertilizer Association head Steve Beckley has been hired as the group’s president/administrator.

Why the new effort? For one, members feel they could be getting a bigger piece of the fertilizer market pie. “There’s certainly a feel out there that farmers are not utilizing micros to the full extent they should to get the proper yields and quality,” says Beckley.

Members believe one way to increase micronutrient use is education, and the association’s Web site will offer vital production information, including the role these products can play in higher yields. CropLife® will let readers know when the new site is available, but Beckley also encourages retailers to investigate The Fertilizer Institute’s (TFI) Web site at www.fertilizer101.org, which features plenty of helpful resources for growers and dealers. MMA will work closely with TFI and other industry groups committed to wise fertilizer use.

Dues are $2,000 per year, which can’t cover major research projects, but if a great opportunity arises, Beckley sees members coming together and assessing funds for the work. Current officers include Richard Camp, chairman; Ron Restum, vice-chairman; and Mike Deiker, secretary/treasurer. Member companies so far include Agrium Advanced Technologies (U.S.) Inc., Cameron Chemicals, Inc., Kronos Micronutrients, LP, Nulex, Inc., Old Bridge Chemicals, Inc., Omni Agri Trade Group, QC Corp., Tetra Micronutrients, U.S. Borax, Inc., Winfield Solutions, LLC and Wolf Trax, Inc.
