Looking Ahead To 2010 Inputs

What can you do in today’s business climate to still make a profit on inputs?

Contributing editor Andrea Klosterman Harris talked with several ag retailers to get an early sense about these issues in 2010 — and collected several tips for avoiding getting burned by high-priced inventories in our September CropLife® magazine cover story, “Uneven Recovery.”

These tips include:

  • Buy cheaper inventory and cost average what you sell.
  • Adaptibility is key.
  • Watch product costs closely.

She concludes that retailers need to avoid overstocking high-priced inventory — and remain optimistic.

It’s also important to not only communicate with your co-workers in tougher times, but to talk to others in your industry at association meetings, via the Comments section following each CropLife.com article, and at the local coffee shop. You’re sure to gain insights, tips, and viewpoints that you haven’t yet explored that can help you weather and possibly thrive the coming off-season.

Is someone on your dealership/cooperative staff currently on active duty in the U.S. military? Or recently returned from active duty? Please send us a short bio – their name, their role at your company, and where they are currently serving – along with a photo at work or in uniform for a CropLife eNews Veterans Day feature. Short anecdotes or how you’re staying in touch can be included.
