Giving Thanks

I’m sure I may have mentioned this in a past column, but just to reiterate — as holidays go, Thanksgiving is my favorite. There are two reasons for this.

First off, unlike most holidays, Thanksgiving is not very stressful. There is no running around, fighting crowds to find the perfect gift or get a better vantage point to see a fireworks display. Instead, Thanksgiving is a time to reflect, recognizing what one already has in his or her life and sharing time with family and friends. Given the usually busy pace of life, it’s nice to have a day to literally stop and smell the roses (or turkey, in this case).

And that’s the second reason I enjoy Thanksgiving — the food. Although other holidays such as Christmas and the Fourth of July have their food traditions, Thanksgiving dinner is something entirely over-the-top. There are plenty of vegetable dishes and breads. Of course, all of these revolve around the supreme food item of the holiday, the turkey itself.

For this, I have to thank our agricultural industry. Without the hard work of growers and ag retailers, I seriously doubt America’s dinner tables at Thanksgiving would be filled with such items as mashed potatoes, fresh rolls or corn soufflé. I am very thankful being part of such an important business in the fabric of our society.

I am also thankful for my loving wife, beautiful son and supportive family. My friends and co-workers are important to my sense of well-being, too.

So, in closing, let me wish everyone in the CropLife world a very happy Thanksgiving holiday! Now, let’s eat!
