Dekalb To Expand Trait Offering

Dekalb advancements in corn germplasm, combined with the latest trait and technology innovations, have improved yield potential, driven faster drydown, and created better stress and disease tolerance. The 2010 Dekalb product lineup will include 13 products featuring new Genuity SmartStax technology, offering growers the most advanced, all-in-one trait combination on the market to control the broadest spectrum of above- and below-ground insects and provide herbicide tolerance to enable control of weeds.

Beginning with the 2010 growing season, Dekalb will be a leading provider of products featuring Genuity SmartStax, which provides comprehensive pest protection for reduced risk and greater peace of mind. In addition, growers who plant Genuity SmartStax in corn-growing regions will benefit from a reduced refuge requirement. In the Corn Belt, growers planting Genuity SmartStax must leave 5 percent of their acres as a non-Bt (Bacillus thuringients) refuge, as compared to other available technologies which require 20% of a grower’s acres to be left as a non Bt refuge.

"Farmers can be confident that the Dekalb brand provides them with the widest selection of the most advanced trait technologies available," says Jenny Boyd, Dekalb marketing manager. "By combining its industry-leading genetics with the latest trait innovations, Dekalb is able to bring to market products with a high yield potential that help farmers maximize profit potential.

"Genuity SmartStax features multiple modes of action to provide the absolute broadest spectrum of insect protection both above and below ground," Boyd adds. "We are excited that Genuity SmartStax will also offer protection from corn earworm, a pest that has not had a reliable control method available previously. Ear feeding pests such as corn earworm increase the probability of a corn ear being infected by pathogens. By reducing insect feeding, we believe that ear rots and molds can also be reduced, leading to better grain quality."

It is predicted that Dekalb brand Genuity SmartStax will be introduced on more than 2 million U.S. corn acres in 2010. For the 2010 growing season, Genuity SmartStax products will be offered in maturities ranging from 83 day to 113 day RM.

Nationally, a few top 2010 Dekalb products with Genuity SmartStax technology will include new genetics, such as DKC40-22, DKC46-07, DKC49-94, and DKC51-14. These products not only feature strong emergence and vigor, but also finish strong and dry down well for the northern climates.

Additionally, DKC53-78, DKC55-09, DKC61-06, -85 each offer an excellent combination of consistent performance and top-end yield potential for the central and southern Corn Belt states.
