Wilbur-Ellis Monte Vista: Setting An Environmental Example

For state Environmental Respect Award winner Wilbur-Ellis Co., Monte Vista, CO, stewardship is just part of doing business in ag retail in the 21st century. “We have learned to make a difference and set examples,” says Jere Jones, manager. “Environmental respect is very important to Wilbur-Ellis. This is the future of our kids. We respect the land and the water. This is an investment of our future because we believe in stewarding our products and helping our customers make a return on their investments.”

This effort starts with how the outlet handles its bulk crop protection products. According to Jones, the area where this takes place is totally contained and all rinse water is used in mixes and put back into customer fields.

Of course, he adds, safety plays a big role in this as well. “We have all local emergency response teams aware and provide up-to-date information to them,” says Jones. “We have an open house each year so that our customers can see our operations first-hand to see safety is our No. 1 priority.”

The outlet also gives back to its community, annually contributing approximately $10,000 to sponsor various events and activities. “We have shown our community that we are very involved in what happens here,” says Jones. “We believe that our customers come first and always will.”
