Measuring Progress In Watershed Monitoring

Natalie Segrest with the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) explains how watershed monitoring, one piece of the nutrient loss reduction puzzle, works in her state.

Monitoring locations are selected for capturing data downstream from fields using BMPs. Data is then collected both before and after a practice is used. Those data are then analyzed to determine how effective the BMP(s) were at reducing nutrient loads.

Segrest reports her office is beginning to transition into the data analysis phase of pilot projects that implemented nutrient strategies in the last few years.

“As a result of the process, we will report on BMP effectiveness and begin to answer one of the main questions about our nutrient reduction strategies: what is achievable?” she says. An added benefit is that the team will use what they have learned to refine implementation and monitoring activities for future efforts.
