CPS Leland: Sharing The Environmental Good Word

Being a good environmental stewardship impacts not just an ag retail outlet, but its entire community. Take the story of Crop Production Services (CPS) of Leland, MS, for example. A 2012 state winner in the Environmental Respect Awards program, this facility has done what it can to spread the good news about its environmental efforts.

“Agriculture is very instrumental in our local economy, affecting our businesses, schools, churches, employment and tax base,” says Frank Greenlee, location manager. “As an industry, we feel it is our duty to take a positive message into our communities in order to fulfill our goal of creating a positive message regarding environmental respect and stewardship.”

CPS Leland adheres to this message with many of its outlet features as well. For instance, the entire chemical warehouse is diked. And while its two 1,000-gallon fuel storage tanks are not, there’s a good reason why this is the case, says Greenlee — because they were custom-made for the company with double walls, eliminating the need for a dike.

In the crop protection products warehouse, the company keeps a file of any storage and training requirements on hand, with some products being segregated as required and safety equipment readily available. CPS Leland also holds a monthly safety meeting so employees are fully aware of the outlet’s safety procedures, adds Greenlee.

“We have developed an emergency response plan to be in compliance with all local, state and federal regulations,” he says. “Our entire staff has been trained and is familiar with this plan and its execution.”

Going forward, Greenlee doesn’t foresee this commitment to environmental stewardship distinguishing any time soon. “Without the proper stewardship of agricultural inputs, our sustainability as a global leader will be in jeopardy,” he says. “With the exponential increase in global population within the next few decades, it is imperative that we strive to do our part.”
