CPS Kunia: Stewardship In Paradise

The Crop Production Services (CPS) retail outfit in Kunia, HI, is in quite the unique situation. Although tourism has always been the main economic driver throughout the Pacific Island paradise, agriculture is no slouch in the Aloha State, either, as it currently generates $2.9 billion to the state’s annual economy and provides 42,000 jobs, according to the Hawaii Department of Agriculture.

Despite the long, storied history of Polynesian agriculture and the significant role it plays in Polynesian culture, according to CPS Kunia Facility Manager Ron Kauhaahaa there are still some that view farming on the island negatively.

“We are always considered the bad guys for what we sell and do, but I think we are probably a group that is more aware of the environment than most others,” says Kauhaahaa. “We are always being tested and inspected by different agencies, making sure we are in compliance.”

To ensure compliance, CPS Kunia employs a full-time safety coordinator in Ira Nakagawa. The retailer also has plans to enclose its holding tanks with an overhead roof in the next six months.

“My philosophy is always keeping the facility clean and organized,” says Kauhaahaa. “It should always look like it was just freshly painted. Our employees take pride in this facility, and our customers speak highly of it, too.”
